Common Use of Spironolactone

Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic used to treat conditions such as high blood pressure, heart failure, edema (fluid retention), and primary hyperaldosteronism. It is also used off-label for hormonal acne, hirsutism (excess hair growth), and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women. It works by blocking the hormone aldosterone, helping the body eliminate excess fluid while retaining potassium.

Spironolactone Dosage and Direction

Spironolactone is usually taken once or twice daily with or without food. Dosage depends on the condition being treated and the patient’s kidney function and electrolyte levels. Always follow your doctor's instructions, and do not increase or stop the dose without medical advice.

Precautions

Drug Interactions

Missed Dose

If you miss a Spironolactone dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one. Do not take two doses at once.
